Making Care Fair

Help Us Be Safe
The Help Us Be Safe Project (HUBS) aims to support adults with learning disabilities to explain for themselves what everyone else could do to help them live safer and more fulfilling lives in South East Essex.
HUBS introduction film
Written and developed by the HUBS team and Steering Group this short film gives everyone an introduction to the project, its hopes and aims, and hopefully an insight into what HUBS is doing for the community.
Many thanks to everyone who helped us produce this film, especially (in order of appearance) Robbie, Arwen, Gary, Andre, Matt, and Nick.
HUBS is funded by the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner for Essex, and Making Care Fair is funded by the Essex Community Foundation, and both are run by Blade Education, a Southend Not for profit company.

HUBS COMMUNITY DAY 2025
A huge thank you to everyone who joined the HUBS team at Southend Forum on Thursday 28th August. On the day we launched the HUBS Interim Report detailing the work that the project has done and the outcomes that adults with LDA have asked for, how they see crime and antisocial behaviour, and how the community can work together to make their lives safer when they are out in public.
Robbie and Arwen kindly accepted an award from Julie Fosh, the High Sherrif of Essex, on behalf of the Making Care Fair project, of which HUBS is a large part, which was 'in recognition of great and valuable services to the community.
Southend East MP Bayo Alaba, and many local dignatories joined us at the Southend Forum to watch the HUBS films on the huge screen they have there, sharing the personal expereinces of crime and antisocial behaviour that members of the LDA community have had to cope with.
HUBS Interim Report
As part of the HUBS Community day, the team published its interim report, which you can read below.
HUBS project.
Blade Education has been given some funding by the Essex Community Safety Fund to support adults with learning disabilities to explain for themselves what everyone else could do to help them live safer and more fulfilling lives in South East Essex.
For anyone who isn’t sure, the NHS explains that “A learning disability affects the way a person learns new things throughout their life.” What’s complicated about is that a learning disability is unique to each person. No two people are the same.
However, an adult with a learning disability who has capacity to live independently will probably have some difficulty with understanding complicated information, learning some skills and navigating the world safely. The Help US Be Safe Project (HUBS) has been funded to work with those people with learning disability who have the capacity to access the world alone without a carer to find out what else is needed to keep them safe and make them more confident of the world around them.
The project is about to listening and learning from the experts in this field, adults with learning disabilities in SE Essex. The HUBS team are going to be out visiting, holding meetings in person and online alongside our HUBS Ambassadors. The HUBS Steering Group will support the HUBS Project managers to put together a report on what life is like for them right now so that we can move on to the second part of the project which is using that report to designing training for community safety teams, the police and anyone who wants to learn more about how to be a community safety advocate for this community. This training will be led by members of the LD community.
